Bank Makes Decision Not to Act
Like a Bank Lancaster, PA – Union National Community Bank is scheduled to open the doors of a new branch location at 1625 Old Philadelphia Pike on Monday, April 24th. Unlike any other that the bank has ever opened, this branch will function not only as a bank, but also as a cafe. Operating under the name Gold Café, the bank’s goal is to deliver a remarkably different banking experience that connects the aesthetic appeal of a metropolitan coffee house with a great financial services company. The interior space reflects something far from a traditional bank. The walls are painted in warm colors – red, yellow, green and blue. Exposed ceilings, exposed brick, concrete floors, and a coffee bar finished with corrugated aluminum add industrial design elements to the space. A fireplace, sofas, chairs and coffee tables stacked with books invite customers to sit and relax. Large plasma screens broadcast a variety of programming – from CNN to music videos to the bank’s current offers and loan specials. The space also features a sunken den area and a raised platform area for customers and entertainment. Several private areas are also available for confidential financial discussions. A selection of cultural publications like The New Yorker and Communication Arts combined with financial and daily news options like Fortune, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal are dispersed throughout the space for customers to peruse. Gold Café offers numerous benefits to its customers including Wi-Fi access, a kid’s corner, outdoor patio with seating and convenient business hours: - Monday through Friday 6:30am – 7:00pm Union National Community Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union National Financial Corporation, has been serving its communities for over 150 years. Bank Breaks with Tradition The banking experience, as Lancaster County understands it, will change forever when Union National Community Bank launches a new brand at the unveiling of its latest branch on Monday, April 24th. After years of extensive planning, Union National will reveal its strategy to revolutionize the way people bank when it introduces the new brand, Gold Café, via a branch located at 1625 Old Philadelphia Pike. Functioning as both Union National Community Bank and an upscale coffee house, the objective of Gold Café is to deliver a remarkably different banking experience that connects customers to metropolitan culture. The physical environment of Gold Café’ connects to metropolitan culture through its layout, design and use of technology. The artwork, color palettes and architectural and design elements combined with Wi-Fi access, convenient hours 7-days a week and plasma screens that broadcast everything from major news networks to music videos – create a space reminiscent of something found in a major city. The experience will be delivered via another novel concept – the “financial barista.” These specialty trained team members will serve as dual employees of the bank and the coffee operation, and will be experts on bank products, customer experience and the preparation of espresso and espresso based beverages. The Gold Café represents the vision of Union National’s President, Michael Frey. “Banking is a very competitive but highly commoditized industry. We believed true differentiation was imperative for our successful growth, and that the creation and delivery of a remarkable experience was our path to that differentiation. We’ve taken certain stereotypes of a bank and bankers and turned them upside down. We believe it’s possible to be trustworthy and professional while also being innovative, creative and fun.” The first Gold Café office off of Old Philadelphia Pike is situated next to HACC’s Lancaster Campus. The location provides tremendous opportunity for Union National to forge new relationships with the local college community and surrounding businesses and households. This first branch will be followed by an additional Gold Café in East Hempfield Township. Union National Community Bank Implements Unique Lancaster, PA – In an effort to deliver remarkable service to its customer base, Union National Community Bank is taking a non-traditional approach to employee recruitment. The strategy is to observe any individual who demonstrates excellent customer service skills and invite them to consider employment with Union National. The concept was specifically developed as part of an overall strategy that the bank is working on to revolutionize the banking experience through the launch of a new brand, Gold Café. Gold Café is Union National’s approach to delivering a unique banking experience, which will be executed through branches that operate as both bank and café. Referred to as “Financial Baristas,” a term that describes those who are experts in making espresso based drinks, employees of Gold Café undergo financial services, customer experience and extensive barista training. This broad spectrum of training enables them to engage customers at all possible touchpoints in the Gold Café, and to assist customers with all available services. The strategy is executed by recruiters that include the bank’s team members as well as a select group of non-employees who have been trained to identify traits that the bank seeks. The recruiters carry information cards with them at all times and any time one of the recruiters encounters someone who is delivering remarkable customer service skills, they give that individual a card which directs them to a web site www.remarkablejobs.com. With the goal of peaking the recipient’s curiosity, the card intentionally provides a limited amount of information. It lists three options for ideal jobs: - Herding Sheep www.david-lewis.com/sheepgame “While it’s necessary that we maintain professionalism in the workplace, we want the working environment here to be relaxed, fun and enjoyable,” said Mike Mohn, Senior Vice President of Organizational Development. “These cards were developed to attract the type of individual who can engage the customer by delivering a remarkable experience, but who also values a workplace that embraces the idea that work doesn’t have to be work.” Union National Community Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union National Financial Corporation, has been serving its communities for over 150 years.
