A Fictional Tale by Adrian L. Slusser
My
given name is Goldmir Cafesanto Coffeebas Cartopolis, but I prefer
C.C. for short. This is my story.
My fathers side of the family tree includes the great explorer Cortez,
and on my mothers side is the proverbial King of coffee, Juan Valdez,
so my lineage is, to say the least, quite long and noteworthy. I remember
grandpapa hooking up his wagon to the burro and trekking several days
across the mountains of Brazil looking for the best wild coffee beans.
He would then bring them back to our hut and roast them over an open
pit, and when they were just right, he would package them into burlap
bags and load up the wagon and burro and head into the city to sell his
beans. There were times when I traveled with grandpapa, and I couldn’t
wait for the day that I could be as important as he. In my country we
have over 5 million people harvesting over 3 billion coffee plants. I
believe he would be proud of me now, as I am now employed as the official
Gold Café Coffee Cart!
As a child I dreamed of delivering gourmet coffee all over the world.
I was actually lucky enough to study the art of coffee delivery via a
student exchange program. My studies originally took me to the American
Barista and Coffee School in Portland, Oregon, were I was versed in the
classics, including java history, bean anatomy, and aroma chemistry.
I graduated with degrees in both pod engineering and finance, and earned
the distinguished “BrewMaster” Medal of Honor.
But my studies weren’t done yet, as I was accepted into the prestigious
Istituto Nazionale Espresso Italiano in Brescia Italy to study the fine
Italian art of “espresso”. I was immersed in the life and
culture of espresso in Italy, where there are over 200,000 espresso bars
throughout the country. It was there that I teamed up with another student
from Parabiago, Italy, and we were able to complete the famed “Certificate
Italiano Espresso”, and thus were prepared to deliver one of the
best and most unique coffee experiences to the public.
After completing our studies in Italy, we came back
to the United States to begin the search for employment. We immediately
were drawn to Union
National Community Bank and their new “Gold Café”,
and knew that would be the best place to use our background, talents,
and education to blend together banking and coffee.
We began our career here at UNCB in July of 2006, and have made several
appearances at events such as the Garden Ganza in Maytown, the Elizabethtown
Fair, the Barnstormers, Elizabethtown Block Party, the Susquehanna
Valley Business Expo, a congregational gathering at Lancaster Mennonite
High
School, plus the Hands on House, as well as welcoming students at HACC
and Lancaster Bible College. We look forward to this fall when we can
be out and about even more, so look for us at an event near you.
Here are some fun facts that we learned while in training:
--in 1999 there were over 108 Million coffee consumers in the US
--of those, 17.9 Billion dollars were spent on coffee
--on average, coffee drinkers spend over $160.00 year on coffee
--54% of the US adult population drinks coffee
--of those, 18.2% drink gourmet coffee everyday
--in addition to the 54% of US adults that consume coffee daily,
another 25% drink coffee occasionally
So, like they say in Italy, “beva più caffè”!!
(and if you are wondering what the Coffee Cart does on
it's day off...)
