Winner: Chocolate Bar: “Best Chocolate Store”

NEW YORK- (20 May 2004) - Chocolate should never be stuffy but always mildly sinful. As a tribute to this philosophy, authors Matt Lewis and Alison Nelson, co-owners of New York City’s Chocolate Bar show you how to charge up your palate and appreciate the full range of chocolate choices from the luscious of darks to the creamiest of milks, all while creating a fabulous, chocolate-centered lifestyle. From chocolate fondues, moles, sundaes, brownies and cookies Chocolate Bar: Recipes and Entertaining Ideas For Living the Sweet Life (Running Press, Oct. 2004) will show you how to shake your bon bon while achieving swank affairs of style. From baking, drinking, dining and entertaining, here is a style manual dedicated to everyone’s favorite sweet treat. Like a kid in a candy store, Chocolate Bar will inspire you to experiment. Learn how to throw a swinging sugar soiree, design decadent tasting events and mix the perfect chocolate martini. Or go retro and indulge your craving for old-fashioned chocolate egg creams garnished with a nostalgic bit of saltwater taffy. Honor tradition by baking classic favorites like Deep, Dark Brownies or Red Velvet Cakes. Afterwards, draw a chocolate bath. Chocolate Bar offers recipe revolutions for everything from Lime Brownies and Chocolate Gelatin to Spiced Chocolate Meatballs. Breaking the mold, Chocolate Bar provides a full resource guide including a chronicle of “retro reconfigured” recipes for at home entertaining allowing readers an opportunity to pull off their own stylish celebrations while truly enjoying a mouth full of chocolate. With Chocolate Bar, Matt Lewis & Alison Nelson share their abiding affection for confection through witty observations, delectable recipes and good old-fashion fun. Offering a rare glimpse into the inspirations and experiences behind Manhattan’s candy store for grown-ups, Chocolate Bar juxtaposes American candy store nostalgia through innovative design and the modern lifestyle. A whimsical look at the world of cosmopolitan cocoa, Chocolate Bar is the perfect compliment to any chocolate occasion.

Matt Lewis, Co-Owner
Matt Lewis started his chocolate addiction at a very young age. His mother introduced him to the “Chocolate as Dinner” philosophy when he was 7 and “Chocolate as Breakfast” philosophy when he was eight years old (peanut butter was added to this regiment when he was nine to increase his protein intake). Gradually, Matt learned to eat regular meals like other children, but he just recently (and grudgingly) gave up eating brownies for lunch. After graduating from the University of Alabama Matt moved to New York and worked in the varied worlds of theatre, advertising, and Internet production. After some long years of consuming chocolate in a cubicle, Matt decided to leave the world of corporations and conference calls to open Chocolate Bar with his partner, Alison Nelson. He looks forward to passing on the “Chocolate as Dinner” and “Chocolate as Breakfast” traditions to his customers.

Alison Nelson, Co-Owner
Alison Nelson, a native New Yorker, Alison sipped her first cup of coffee with her father at the age of eight and began serving coffee at St. William’s BINGO night when she was twelve. By the time she hit her teenaged years, she was an avid coffee consumer. Alison put herself through college on the tips of customers at top-notch New York coffee shops including 52 Irving, Zido’s, Once Upon a Tart and Heaven and has always wanted to open her own little place serving the best coffees and teas available. In 2001 she founded the event executing firm Four little Sisters. Her partner Matt Lewis steadily influenced her chocolate addiction and he is happy to take credit for it. Alison’s goals in creating Chocolate Bar are to provide a wonderful product, great service and a reason to make her Dad’s fire truck visit between alarms.
