Make Your Own Instant Chocolate Treats

By Lori Holuta

Why make your own beverage and pudding mixes when you can buy them at the store? Here are three good reasons to get you started.

  • Show your creativity! Create your own custom blends.

  • Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger are 'extras' you can add according to your family's tastes. Vanilla and flavored extracts may also be added later when mixing your drink. Try a hint of peppermint during the holidays. It's fun to experiment.

  • Stretch your family budget

  • Purchase the ingredients on sale, and in bulk if possible. If you have access to a food club (a membership store which sells to the public at a discount), you'll find nearly all the ingredients you need at reduced prices.

  • A treat from your kitchen is a welcome gift

  • Pint-size mason jars make pretty containers for gift giving, but you don't have to buy them if you save empty glass containers throughout the year. Pint-size mayonnaise jars are the perfect size and shape to accept a standard mason jar ring and lid. Take a second look at any glass food containers you empty, and you'll soon have an assortment ready when you want to pack a special mix as a gift.

Here are four of my favorite recipes to get you started. Look over the ingredients, make a shopping list, and grab what you need on your next trip to the store.
